Course Description: NCCER Level 1

COURSE CONTENT:

  • Intro. to basic construction safety, hand tools, drawings, rigging, construction math, materials, and communication skills.

  • Provide an overview of the electrical trade and career paths to electricians.

  • Teaches necessary precautions for various electrical hazards, covers safety rules and regulations.

  • Introduction to electrical concepts used in Ohm’s law applied to DC circuits.

  • Introduction to series, parallel, and series-parallel circuits.

  • Introduction to the layout of the NEC and the types of information found within the code.

  • Introduction of hardware and systems used by the electrician for device boxes.

  • Provides and introduction to conduit bending and installation.

  • Introduces the types and application of raceways.

  • Introduces types and application of conductors and covers proper wiring techniques.

  • Introduction of electrical prints, drawings, and symbols.

  • Introduction of electrical devices and wiring techniques common to residential construction.

  • Introduction on proper selection, inspection, and use of electrical test equipment.

 

Student Learning Outcomes:

1.   Basic understanding of construction safety.

2.   Identify and mitigate unsafe electrical hazards.

3    Proficient in applying Ohm’s law as it applies to DC circuits.

4.   Understand concepts of parallel, series, and series-parallel circuits.

5.   Knowledgeable in the layout and use of the NEC.

6.   Understand various devise box materials and hardware.

7.   Proficient in basic conduit bends (stub up, offset, three and four bend saddles).

8.   Identify various conductor raceways and how they are applied.

9.   Identify and understand conductor properties and how they are applied.

10.   Explain the basic layout of a set of construction drawings.

11.   Proficient in basic residential wiring techniques (single, three and four way switches, etc.).

12.   Identify and utilize various types of electrical testers (ohm meter, volt meter, amp meter, etc.).
